Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
