A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
